Cultural Exchange between Japanese and International
Students
The first semester of the 2018 to 2019 academic year saw seven
international
students, one each from China, Germany, Indonesia, Korea and
Thailand and
two from Brazil join my 3rd Year International Culture English
Communication
class.
The coursebook we used - 'Inspire 2' (Cengage Learning/National
Geographic) offers
topics which lend themselves to exchanging ideas. The topics which
we covered were:
Food, Festivals, Cities, Jobs, Music, Journeys (Travel) and
Happiness.
Each topic was focussed on in two classes. In the second of those,
about half of the
class was used for international students to present information
and ideas about the
topic related to their own countries. However, a two way exchange
was strongly
encouraged.
Below are some of the groups in the final session on 2nd August on
'Happiness':

As can be seen, international students have
presented both individually and in pairs.
Numbers of Japanese students in these exchanges have ranged from
one to eight.
On a scale of 5, Japanese students gave a rating of 4.1 for their
experience.
