Promoting an ELF Mindset in Japan
Date and Time: Saturday, 22 April 2017 - 10:00am - 4:30pm
Speakers: Takayuki Nagamine, Patrick Ng, Tricia Okada, Alan
Thompson.
Location: Aichi University Toyohashi Campus Kenkyuukan
Schedule:
10:00 Opening

10:15 Takayuki Nagamine (Aichi
University of Education) - Attitudes towards Japan English and its
features. In this presentation, the presenter looked at ways of
accounting for phonetic features in Japan English, taking into
consideration the fluidity and flexibility that ELF has and
ensures.

11:15 Patrick Ng (University of
Niigata) - Enacting an ELF-informed teaching paradigm: The
experience of one teacher. In this paper, the presenter explored
the strategies and paths to document the ways he switched to an
English as Lingua Franca (ELF)-informed teaching paradigm.

13:15 Tricia Okada (Center for
English as a Lingua Franca, Tamagawa University) - “How did we end
up here?” - Filipino English Language Teachers in Japan. One of
the effects of globalization is the demand for English teachers
that has evolved not only from native speakers but also to include
non-native speakers. This change has paved the way for Filipinos
to teach the English language in Japan.
14:15 Alan Thompson (Gifu Shotoku
Gakuen University) - ELF in Japan: selection and cooperative
restructuring. This session reported on fieldwork at three
authentic ELF environments in Japan, diverse in terms of purposes,
event types, and participants (with their background experiences
and language repertoires).

15:15 Discussion
This was a mini-conference jointly sponsored by Aichi University
and Toyohashi Chapter.
