Our next meeting is on Sunday 29th January 2017

Our December 2016 Meeting was:

Professor Rie Adachi (Aichi University) The possibility of practicing CLIL in Japanese elementary schools.

The presentation was on Sunday 18th December from 1.30 pm to 4.00 pm
at Room 541 (Building 5) at Aichi University's Toyohashi Campus. To get there

In this presentation the speaker examined the possibilities of contextualizing Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) into Japanese elementary schools, and discussed how to implement CLIL lessons which are adjusted to Japanese educational settings. In Japan, it is a priority to improve students’ English communicative proficiency. Therefore, Japan will start English education for the third grade and above from the academic year 2020. The presenter believes CLIL should be employed rather than just introducing English lessons. Although Japanese elementary school teachers usually do not have high proficiency in English, they do have confidence in teaching skills in general subjects. In addition, the 4Cs (Content, Cognition, Communication, and Culture/Community) are considered very important in CLIL lessons. The speaker conducted two studies to ask school teachers about CLIL lessons and based on the results she discussed the possibilities and potential problems of implementing CLIL lessons into the Japanese educational context.

The meeting was followed by our end of year 'Bonenkai' party. See you there!
