Duty of Care

I read '
Duty of Care' in July 2021. Written by Doctor Dominic Pimenta, it describes his
experiences in the earlier part of the Covid-19 pandemic in the U.K. With a background
in cardiology (heart medicine), he returned to his earlier location, ICU (Intensive Care Units)
and experienced the full blast of the '1st Wave'. Long hours and lack of sleep, increased by
his own frenetic efforts to draw attention to the scale of the challenge at the beginning and
then his admirable efforts to support colleagues in the N.H.S. (National Health Service). He
set up an organisation, HEROES, with associates. It provided practical assistance like meals
for staff and P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment) and mobilised support including celebrity
'ambassadors'. In fact, the royalties (profits) from this book have gone to that organisation.
He did this while also coping with the typical challenges of looking after two young children
with his wife.

He had long been a politically oriented campaigner for the N.H.S. and his name had come
to my attention when he threatened to resign if government advisor, Dominic Cummings, did
not resign after he was was criticised for breaking social distancing regulations. His passion
for the N.H.S. shines throughout.
