TRAVEL
In
December 2015, I spent a few days in Newcastle and Edinburgh.
Newcastle, with a population of around 300,000, was once most
famous as a centre of shipbuilding.
Now, the historic centre has been the focus of 'regeneration'.
It is dominated by this column,
'Grey's Monument', with a statue of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey.
It was built in 1838, to commemorates
the passing of the Great Reform Act (1832):

Newcastle is Newcastle on Tyne, indicating the importance of the
River Tyne.
Bridging it are a number of impressive structures:
Foreground: The Tyne Bridge (1928) Background:
Gateshead Millennium Bridge (2001)

Foreground:
Hydraulic Swing Bridge (1876) Background: High
Level Bridge (1849)
