Assessment
for learning: two case studies in Vietnam
Our next meeting: Sunday,
29th November 2015 - 1:30pm - 4:00pm
Location: Aichi University (Toyohashi Campus)
Building 5, Room 541.
Speaker: Hà Phạm Việt (JALT Four Corners speaker)
For years, the
focus of assessment in Vietnam has been on the results of
learning. It often comes in the form of tests designed to
measure how much the students know from what they have been
taught, not what they can do with the language they have
learned.
This
presentation explains how two forms of assessment for learning,
namely project-based and learning portfolio assessment were
adopted for two groups of learners (primary school and high
school students) in two different teaching contexts in Vietnam
(rural and urban). These studies show that assessment for
learning, when appropriately designed and locally adapted, can
be used successfully, even in low-resourced contexts.
Ms. Pham is
Director of Studies for Oxford English Academy in Vietnam. She
has an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of
Melbourne.
