Title: Haiku in the Second Language Writing Classroom: Theory into
Practice
One of the issues of Japanese EFL college students is that they
cannot express what they want to say in English
though they have approximately six years of English learning
experiences (Iida, 2011).
What happens in this context is that students can write
grammatically correct sentences,
but they don’t feel attached in their writing. Whatever genre
second language writers work on,
voice should appear in their texts.
This presentation discussed the issue of voice in second language
writing and explored how
to develop it by composing haiku in a second language. After
exploring how the social-expressivist
approach can facilitate Japanese students’ development of voice,
the presenter discussed how haiku
fits in with that approach and showed some activities for use in
the Japanese EFL classroom.
