The Nagara river flows through the center of Gifu city and the streets are centered on the left bank. It was a castle town with Gifu castle at the top of Mt.Kinka. After that it prospered as a post town on the Nakasendo in the Edo period.

Area is 8.16 square kms.
Population density is 7,531 persons/square km.
Households are 26,309.
The rate of increase of the population is -0.1%.
In this ward, there are
many historical cultural heritages which including Atsuta Shrine,
Danpusan ancient tomb, Shiratori ancient tomb and Hichiri-no-watashi
in Miya-no-watashi park which prospered very much during the
Edo period.
