'Zemi' Members and Topics 2003-4

This year's final year students have now completed their graduation theses. This year, as always, there were a wide range of topics. Here are the members and some advice.

Emiko - The modern British view towards education

"I think the earlier you start thinking of the thesis, the better, for it takes much time especially to read materials. The important thing is to have a main vision of what you would like to say and think about the organization well at first, and then write mainly what is clearly related to your topic. I had trouble with organizing chapters, I mean I sometimes put much information which is not so much directly connected, because fortunately I could have a lot of information from books and the Internet and I felt most information I got was important."

Emiko

Kimiko - The history of London and its streets

Koji - The history of British football

Megumi - Changes in British working class lifestyle and culture in the twentieth century

Miyuki -The enduring appeal of fairies in Irish culture

Nozomi - The National Health Service

Yuka - The history of tea

"If it's possible, you should think of the organization of a thesis first so that the connection between chapters is more cohesive, and I recommend you take enough time on reading books or thinking about your topic carefully and even start to write a first chapter especially during summer vacation because it is the best time to do that. Don't forget to choose a topic about which you can obtain enough materials. I myself changed my topic three times, first 'history of corporal punishment in British education', second 'history of hats' and finally 'British tea culture', because I couldn't find enough information both about the first and second subjects. I think it is essential to choose a topic which you can gather enough information to write a thesis."
