3RD YEAR WRITING CLASS


Aims:

The aim of this class is to make a bridge between the short assignments of the 2nd Year (usually one to two pages) and the important graduation report in the 4th Year (average = 50 to 60 pages).

Specific aims are to:

increase vocabulary knowlege - obviously the more words are known, the better!
improving cohesion - the way a piece of writing is put together so ideas go together well
enhancing critical faculties - seeing both sides of an issues (eg: advantages and disadvantages)
making references and a bibliography - when you sources such as books from a library are used, it is important to know how to correctly indicate them.

Methods:

Broadly, a process approch to writing is encouraged. While language errors are from ignored, the main focus is on building up ideas to increase the quality and quantity of writing. How are ideas built up?

Brainstorming

Input from 'authentic' media such as TV reports, newspaper and magazine articles.

Peer Suggestions - students read others' writings and pose questions that they would like answered with rewriting.

Assessment:

This is a combination of teacher-, peer-, and self-grading.

So, what have students been writing about?
