Television - is it a force for good or mostly a total waste of time?

Asami writes:

I don't think watching television is a total waste of time. There is a lot of information in TV, so children can get information from TV. But there can be too much information in TV, and it not always good information, for example that which is violent an immoral. If one child watches 'Kureyon Shinchan', s/he may imitate the main character, Shinchan. Actually, when I was in elementary school, I watched it, I spoke like him and I was scolded by my mother. I seemed to irritate her. Finally I wasn't allowed to watch that program. I think the effect of a program itself may be bad for children, if we think and care about imitating some bad behavior, but it is important whether there are some parents who can judge it and scold their children. Because of being scolded, they noticed that the way of speaking like Kureyon Shinchan gives a bad impression to other people sooner or later. Good programs like 'Project X' or 'Sannen B-gumi Kinpachi Sensei', are of course good for children, so if parents want to show them to their children and influence them, the parents should have an interest in the program, recommend it to the children and watch it together. However, there are other problems in watching TV. For example, because of it, children may not play outside, come to have poor eyesight and so on, so parents should control their child related to watching TV. In short, I can say that it depends on parents whether watching television is good for children or not, though children may know if it is good or bad and can choose one by themselves.

How about adults?
