Yuka writes about Sadako Ogata, her heroine
The person who I respect is Mrs. Sadako Ogata. She was the High Commissioner of the UNHCR in 1991-2000. UNHCR means United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This organization was established in 1951 to protect refugees' lives and give them chances to work or education. Mrs. Ogata visited refugee camps herself and tried to grasp their situation correctly. She wrestled with the problem very seriously. Such an attitude attracts me. And as their actions to relieve more than 27 million refugees were recognised, they received a Nobel Prize for Peace twice. And now there are more than 270 bureaus in about 120 countries and about five thousand staff members (more than sixty of them are Japanese.). I'm interested in the action like this which deal with international problems. And I respect Mrs. Ogata because she did not only think but also acted.
