Newsworthy?
On 7th June students were asked the question, 'What do you think the most important news item has been in the past week to ten days?
Crimes figured large:
Sixteen members chose a woman suspected of the murder of her daughter
and her friend.
One referred to "A son killed his mother and father in the middle of a street in front of his house."
Four focussed on the arrest of Hiroaki Murakami who has been charged with insider trading.
One said "Fuji TV won't broadcast 'Pride'."
One wrote about an elevator accident:
"Because of the accident, a boy was dead. When the boy left
from the elevator, the elevator suddenly went up so the boy was
crushed."
Only one student chose a world item not directly connected with Japan, which was the earthquake which occurred in Java, Indonesia. "About 5,000 people were killed by the earthquake. It's a very big disaster."
And the World Cup of course was important for three students!
Japan vs. Germany - "Because the World Cup takes place
soon, I'm looking forward to watching it. I'm interested in how
Japan's display their ability in the World Cup. I thought Japan
would lose the friendly match with the Germans, but they scored
first and the game ended in a draw. I was really surprised at
watching
it."
Japan vs. Malta - "I think the game is very important, because it was the last game before the World Cup. So, not only the result but also the content was important. Sadly, both of them were not so good. I hope Japan advances to the final of the World Cup." and "Because after the friendly match, I and a lot of Japanese people raised their hopes for the World Cup because Japan made a good fight."
