CLIL Research in Hong
Kong.
February 2017 saw colleague, Tony Ryan and I in Hong Kong for
activities
connected with our Kaken CLIL
project.
On 19th February, we met three former students from Hong Kong
Institute
of Education (now The Education University of Hong Kong). They are
now
respectively teaching English, Chinese (Cantonese and Putongwua)
and
Special Needs at elementary school. We found out that at their
regular
public (state) schools, English remains a self-contained subject,
with no
CLIL element.
However, on 20th February, we had made an arrangement to see three
classes at the Education University of Hong Kong's affiliated
Jockey Club
Primary (Elementary) School. They were 3rd year and 1st Year
Physical Education
courses, where the focus was respectively on using a racquet and
shuttlecock
successfully, and on bouncing a basketball. Instructions were
given almost
totally in English. The final class we saw was a 6th year Visual
Arts course.
The content was challenging, but again was given in English by the
teacher.
Finally, on 21st February, we visited the Hong Kong Educational
Resources
Centre at Kowloon Tong. We were very impressed by the facilities,
looked
through materials, some of which we purchased, including this book
put
together by teachers at the Pentecostal Lam Hon Kwong School:

and also had a chance to see a great exhibition of school
students' artwork.

CLIL at Meijo University.
